Where Is The Vending Business Going?

We are all pretty well aware that vending machines are not the home for foods that will help us maintain a healthy, slim line lifestyle. They are generally packed with salty snacks, chocolate bars, and cans of soda that are almost the equivalent of drinking a bag of sugar. But have things changed over the last years to answer the needs of a more sophisticated population? I remember reading somewhere that cigarette and candy automats were in place by the 1930’s, and by the time World War II rolled around, vending machines were raking in $600 million, an astronomical amount considering that most of the candy they stocked sold for a penny.

You have to wonder if the whole automated vendor industry was built by some crazed mental person with a desire to watch us suffer. Who else would set the glass at a distance from the wares on display, just wide enough for a bag of chips to get lodged on the way down? If you even felt compassionate about animals in a zoo, pay attention next time you wait in line by the coffee dispenser.

Automated vendors have undergone a number of facelifts over the years, mostly to keep up with advancements in the technology, but it’s not just the aesthetics that have evolved, it’s also the products that are available for sale that have changed with the times. How about a drinks machine that comes complete with facial recognition and will recommend a beverage based on your mug? Almost positive it would recommend a glass of white wine for me, how’s that for a challenge? I’m in two minds about picking up your medication from an automated dispenser as some folks do in Wyoming. I’d hate to misspell my meds and end up with laxatives instead of my Viagra, although I admit an insulin vending machine in my neighborhood would save me 2H driving every month.

Most upgrades seen in the vendor business are put in place so that dispensers will eventually be cashless which, makers hope, will cut down on the amount of vandalism by thieves looking to get at the cash. A whole new market has open for companies ready to take in old vending machines, refurbish them and fit them with secure coin mechs and magnetic or chip card readers,  instilling new life into outdated hardware.

The vending machine industry is one that seems to be completely recession proof and the annual income from all machines globally continues to rise no matter what the economy looks like. If you are looking for a solid, simple business to start up on your own, then the vending machine route may be the road to follow.
